Aintree Race report Sat 17th Sept

Neston's Chris Morley had a great final round of the Aintree Motorcycle Racing Championships on Saturday 17th September.

He grabbed 7th and 6th from forty competitors in his two qualifying races before surprising everyone by coming through the field to finish third in the main Superbike final, arguably the biggest bike race of the year at the Liverpool circuit.

The racer, who was once the youngest professional rider for Suzuki before a huge crash, had been targeting a top six result on Saturday, so third in the main fixture event was hugely satisfying for the team who were kept very busy switching tyres to suit constantly changing conditions.

Chris said: "When I came in from the race I had no idea where I had finished - the guys were standing there clapping with huge smiles so I knew I had got the job done, but third was a very nice surprise."

Aintree Race Report Sat 13th August

It is fast turning into a great season for Battery supported racer Chris Morley. He continued to progress towards the front at Aintree on Saturday 13 August, finishing tenth in the Superbike heat, eighth in the Powerbike heat and seventh in the Powerbike final. He had a DNF in the Superbike final after outbraking himself on the penultimate lap whilst battling in the top ten. A key milestone was reached for the Battery racer, with Chris now firmly 'on the board' in the Ace of Aintree Powerbike Championship, with points awarded to the first seven finishers in finals only. Chris maintains an impressive record of improving his finish position each time he rides the bike. He also shed almost a second from his PB Aintree laptime, from 58.4 to 57.6, whilst running old tyres.

The results were achieved despite a hot pace at the front and the weekend being far from trouble free. Chris says: "what a great weekend, again enjoying Battery Energy at the race meeting I have come away with a PB laptime! I got a terrible start, but knew that if I pinned it I could work my way through overtaking two or three riders a lap. When I exited the bottom corner with two laps remaining to see a bike spinning on the ground I knew that I must have been elevated a position and that a top seven was definitely bagged. With a half decent start we would have been top six. But laptimes are everything in my book and we achieved another great time. It was handy having a good bunch of guys with me as the issues that we had to overcome included bottoming forks, false neutrals, a misfiring engine and warning lights on the dash!" (the latter fixed by taking an electrical component from a car).

Looking to the next round in September, Chris feels that he has yet to find the optimum settings on the BM to suit the high speed Aintree track. He also realises that if he is to run the pace of the top three then he is going to need to get away with them at the start. With that in mind, there are plans to strip the clutch and fix the bottom end misfire, which should enable a decent launch off the line.

In 2007, having previously raced for Suzuki GB, Chris returned to the physically demanding sport of motorcycle road racing, competing in Formula 400. As well as finishing first in F400 races, over the next two years he also scored pole positions and wins in races open to larger capacity and faster motorcycles.

Chris progressed to Superbikes, - considered the ‘premier division’ of motorcycle racing.
